For a family car with a fixed configuration, CarScout is our pick: one daily email of dealer cars that match your must-haves and skip your deal-breakers. If you're still deciding between a minivan and a 3-row SUV, start free with CarGurus for deal ratings and AutoTempest for breadth.

Full disclosure: we make CarScout, one of the tools on this list. We'll tell you what we'd use if we were shopping for a family car, including the free tools that aren't ours. Short version: the hard part of a family-car search isn't finding minivans. It's finding the one with the right seats, drivetrain, and color without reading 200 listings.

Why family-car searches are harder than they look

Family buyers rarely want "a Honda Odyssey." They want a specific mix: second-row captain's chairs or a bench, all-wheel drive for winter, a trim with the safety features they care about, a color that isn't silver, and a mileage cap. Each of those cuts the pool.

Most marketplace filters handle make, model, year, price, and mileage well. Seating layout and specific features live in the listing text, where they're described inconsistently, if at all. So the job has two parts:

  1. Narrow on structured fields: trim, drivetrain, body style, years, mileage, color.
  2. Check the rest by asking: seating and many features live in the description or photos, which alert filters don't read reliably. Ask the seller to confirm by VIN.

Whatever tool you use, confirm seating and features with the seller before you travel. Listing text isn't proof. Our guide to checking a used car's options covers how.

1. CarScout (ours)

Best for Price How alerts arrive
A fixed config with must-haves and must-nots $5/week, $15/month, $99/year; 3 scouts included One daily digest email

This is ours. You set a spec scout once: make, model, trim, years, price, mileage, drivetrain, exterior and interior color, and keywords. Price, mileage, and year ranges work as limits. Colors, transmission, drivetrain, body style, fuel type, and keywords can each include or exclude. So "AWD only, no silver, EX-L or Touring trim, under 60,000 miles" is one scout. We check MarketCheck's dealer listings about every 24 hours and email you new matches and price drops in one digest.

Three scouts come with every plan, which suits a family deciding between, say, a minivan and two 3-row SUVs.

What it won't do: cover private sellers, rate deals, or send texts. It's a web app with no phone app. And keywords match the listing heading only, which rarely mentions seating.

2. CarGurus

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Comparing prices while you decide Free Saved-search alerts on new listings and price drops; app advertises real-time price alerts

CarGurus is the best free place to learn what a fair price looks like. It rates deals against its Instant Market Value, from Great to Overpriced, where a rating is available. Saved searches alert you to new listings and price drops.

The catch: it watches CarGurus listings only, and its filters won't capture everything in listing text.

3. AutoTempest

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Seeing many sites at once Free Daily email

AutoTempest shows listings from Cars.com, TrueCar, eBay Motors, Carvana, Hemmings, Cars & Bids, and CarSoup in one search, and emails you daily. It's the cheapest way to see how many of your configuration exist at all.

The catch: CarGurus and Autotrader are comparison links there, not included listings, so keep direct alerts on those sites.

4. Visor

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Filtering on factory options Free search; Plus $5/week, $15/month, $60/year, or $250 lifetime Saved-search alerts for new listings

If the feature you need is a factory option rather than a trim, Visor Plus filters on options and shows installed options on listings. That beats keyword matching when the dealer didn't write the option out.

The catch: those features are paid.

5. Autotrader

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Text alerts Free Email or text, daily or weekly

If you'd rather get a text in the school pickup line than an email, Autotrader is the only tool here whose help pages describe text alerts. It's free and lists private sellers too.

The catch: it watches Autotrader only.

Our pick

If you know the configuration, use CarScout and let a scout do the daily checking of dealer listings. If you're still deciding, use CarGurus and AutoTempest for free for two weeks, then turn your final answer into a scout. If a factory option is the deal-breaker, Visor Plus is worth a month.

What we'd do today

  1. Write your must-haves (seats, drivetrain, trim, mileage cap) and your deal-breakers on one line each.
  2. Run the search on CarGurus and AutoTempest to see how many cars exist nationally.
  3. If there are fewer than a handful near you, widen the radius. Our nationwide search guide explains the trade-offs.
  4. Put the final spec into one scout and let the daily email do the checking.
  5. Before you travel, confirm the seats and features by VIN with the seller and check open recalls with our free recall lookup.

FAQ

What's the best free app for finding a used minivan?

CarGurus, for its deal ratings and free alerts, plus AutoTempest to search many sites at once. Both are free.

Can I search for captain's chairs?

Not reliably. Seating is usually in the description or photos, not in a filter. CarScout keywords match the listing heading only, which rarely mentions seating. Narrow by trim and confirm the seating with the seller.

Does CarScout send texts when a minivan is listed?

No. CarScout sends one daily digest email. Autotrader offers text alerts if you need them.

How many cars can I watch with CarScout?

Every plan includes 3 scouts. Extra scouts cost $3 a month each, or $0.75 a week or $25 a year on those plans.

Does CarScout include private sellers?

No. CarScout watches dealer listings only.
