Full disclosure: we make CarScout, so we're biased. Visor is the closest thing CarScout has to a direct rival, and it's a good product. It even charges the same weekly and monthly price. This page tells you where Visor is the better buy, which is more often than you might expect from us.
The bottom line
Pick Visor if you want to research the market yourself: free search, option filters, listing history, sold listings, apps, and a $60 annual plan. Pick CarScout if you know the exact spec and want one daily email of new matches and price drops, with exclusion filters and VIN tracking.

The real difference is who does the searching
Visor is a search tool. You open it, set filters, and look through what the whole market has, with more data per listing than a typical marketplace shows. Its Plus tier adds the details enthusiasts care about: installed options, MSRP, documents found online, and earlier sellers of a used car.
CarScout is a monitor. You describe the car once, as a scout, and we check dealer listings for it about every 24 hours. When something new matches or a matched car drops in price, it goes into one email that day. You can act on the email without opening the web app, where your matches are also listed. Quiet days usually mean no email.
So the question isn't which tool has more features. Visor clearly does. Both offer alerts: CarScout documents exactly one daily digest email, while the Visor pages we checked don't state their alert channel or cadence. The difference is emphasis. Visor is built around research; CarScout is built around a watch you set once.
Where Visor is genuinely better
- Price over a long search. Visor's annual plan is $60. CarScout's is $99. If your search runs past four months, Visor costs less.
- A free way in. You can use Visor's core search without paying. CarScout has no free tier and no trial.
- Option-level data. Filtering for factory options and seeing installed options on a listing is a Plus feature. CarScout filters on trim, color, drivetrain, and keywords, but it doesn't decode a car's option list.
- Research depth. Full listing history, sold listings, and inventory over time help you judge a fair price. CarScout's public market pages show weekly aggregates, not listing-level history.
- Apps and new cars. Visor has iOS and Android apps and documents new and used coverage. CarScout is a web app with no separate new or used filter.
What CarScout offers
- Structured exclusions. You can say "any color except silver" or "no automatic" as a field, not only as a search term. That keeps the daily email focused.
- VIN scouts. Track one car by VIN, or a wildcard VIN pattern, and see its price drops in the same digest as your spec matches.
- A smaller job. If you know the car you want, a single daily email is less work than reopening a search tool. That's the whole pitch.
Visor's pages don't state how fast or how often its alerts arrive, so we don't claim CarScout is faster. CarScout checks each scout about once a day.
Who should pick which
| You are | Pick |
|---|---|
| Still deciding between models or trims | Visor (free search) |
| Buying a car with specific factory options | Visor Plus |
| Searching for 6 months or more | Visor Plus annual |
| Fixed on one spec and short on time | CarScout |
| Following one specific car's price | CarScout VIN scout; Visor to read the listing history |
| Want an app | Visor |
Many buyers would do well with both: Visor to learn the market, then a CarScout scout to watch it. If you only pay for one, the table above is how we'd decide.

Not over a year. Both charge $5 a week or $15 a month, but Visor's annual plan is $60 and CarScout's is $99. CarScout also has no free tier.
Does CarScout send instant alerts?
No. CarScout checks each scout about every 24 hours and sends one digest email a day when there's something new. It has no text, push, or app alerts.
