Honda Recalls 880K Vehicles for Subframe Rust: Buyer Guide

Honda issued NHTSA recall 26V365 on June 4, 2026, covering 880,514 vehicles across four models: 2016-2022 Pilots, 2017-2023 Ridgelines, 2019-2023 Passports, and 2014-2020 Acura MDXs. The problem is rust eating through the rear subframe at the suspension mounting points, which can cause component failure and loss of vehicle control. No crashes or injuries have been reported to Honda yet.

There's a catch with geographic scope that matters if you're shopping used: this recall only applies to vehicles originally sold or registered in 23 states plus Washington, D.C. Where a unit spent its life changes the picture entirely.

What's Actually Failing

The rear subframe is the structural cradle that the rear suspension bolts to. On these vehicles, the factory-applied protective coating can degrade in specific areas, leaving bare steel exposed to road salt, moisture, and the freeze-thaw cycles common in northeastern and midwestern winters.

Per NHTSA recall documentation, as corrosion progresses, the metal can thin, fracture, and fail at the mounting points. If a mounting point fails, the suspension loses its anchor. That can mean loss of handling and loss of control.

Honda estimates about 1% of the 880,514 recalled vehicles have reached the level of corrosion that poses this risk. That works out to roughly 8,800 vehicles on the road with a potentially compromised rear suspension. On a structural component, 1% isn't a number to dismiss.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

The recall covers four model lines, all sharing the same rear subframe design and all sold heavily in states where roads get salted through the winter.

Model Affected Years Salt-Belt States Only
Honda Pilot 2016-2022 Yes
Honda Ridgeline 2017-2023 Yes
Honda Passport 2019-2023 Yes
Acura MDX 2014-2020 Yes

The 23 affected states plus D.C.: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington D.C.

Vehicles originally sold in California, Florida, Texas, Georgia, or other non-salt states are not included in this recall, even if they've since been relocated north.

What This Means If You're Shopping

NHTSA recall 26V365 covers 880,514 Honda Pilots, Ridgelines, Passports, and Acura MDXs built between 2014 and 2023. Only vehicles originally sold in 23 salt-belt states qualify. The rear subframe's factory coating degrades under road salt exposure, leaving bare steel that can corrode to the point of fracture at the suspension mounting points. Honda estimates roughly 1% of the recalled population has reached that stage.

For used buyers, this creates two practical questions: Does the specific vehicle you're looking at fall under the recall, and has the inspection already been done?

Checking recall status: You can search any VIN at NHTSA.gov to see open recall campaigns. Honda owner notification letters are scheduled to go out on July 7, 2026. You don't need to wait. If you're considering any of these models from a salt-belt state, run the VIN before you make an offer.

The repair is free: Honda and Acura dealers will inspect the rear subframe at no charge. Depending on what they find, they'll install a reinforcement kit, repair corroded components, or replace the subframe entirely. If you buy a vehicle that hasn't had the recall completed, you can take it to any Honda or Acura dealer and get it done at no cost to you.

The non-salt-state angle: A 2020 Honda Pilot from Florida hasn't seen road salt. It's not subject to this recall and doesn't carry the same corrosion risk profile as the identical vehicle from Ohio. If you're flexible about where you source a vehicle, units originally sold in the South or Southwest are worth filtering for specifically. It's a meaningful distinction on a structural component.

Current Listings for the Affected Models

The recall was announced three weeks ago and owner letters haven't gone out yet. Prices on these models haven't visibly shifted in response. That's a window where a recall-aware buyer can ask direct questions that many sellers may not be proactively raising.

Per CarScout data as of June 21, 2026:

Model Year Active Listings Price Range
Honda Pilot 2022 885 $16,794-$44,075
Honda Pilot 2020 437 $11,850-$34,403
Honda Pilot 2018 449 $8,687-$28,950
Honda Ridgeline 2022 281 $21,627-$39,985
Honda Ridgeline 2020 170 $16,485-$34,510
Acura MDX 2022 447 $18,294-$52,798
Acura MDX 2020 389 $9,094-$36,069

If a vehicle you're looking at is under the recall and the inspection hasn't been completed, that's a concrete ask before you finalize the deal: either confirm it's been done or get written confirmation that it will be completed prior to delivery.

Is my Honda Pilot affected by recall 26V365?

The recall covers 2016-2022 Honda Pilots originally sold or registered in 23 states plus D.C.: CT, DE, IL, IN, IA, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, VA, WV, WI. Search your VIN at NHTSA.gov to confirm. Honda begins mailing owner notifications on July 7, 2026.

What happens if the rear subframe fails?

Failure at the rear suspension mounting points can cause a loss of vehicle handling and control, per NHTSA's recall documentation. Honda estimates about 1% of the 880,514 recalled vehicles have reached the corrosion level that poses this risk. No crashes or injuries related to this defect have been reported to Honda as of the recall date.

Should I avoid buying a Honda Pilot or Acura MDX because of this recall?

Not necessarily. The repair is free at any Honda or Acura dealer, and a vehicle that's already had the inspection and reinforcement completed has no outstanding structural concern on this issue. Before buying any affected model from a salt-belt state, verify recall status by VIN. Units from non-salt-belt states aren't subject to this recall at all and represent a lower-risk option for buyers who can source outside their local market.
