That price drop means the Model Y is now squarely in the used-car mainstream, but the gap between a well-optioned 2023 and a first-production 2020 is substantial. The specific model year, the powertrain, and the factory where a car was built all matter. This guide covers the original generation: 2020 through 2023, before the Juniper refresh changed the platform.

This Generation at a Glance

The Model Y first delivered in March 2020. It shares the rear portion of its platform with the Model 3 but has a taller roofline, a tailgate instead of a trunk lid, and an optional third-row seat. Tesla's heat pump thermal management system was standard from the first deliveries.

The generation ended with the 2023 model year. The Juniper refresh arrived for model year 2025, bringing a redesigned exterior, a new 15.4-inch touchscreen, ventilated seats, and substantially improved build quality.

Within the original generation, the most meaningful dividing lines are:

Long Range AWD (2020-2023)

The Long Range AWD is the model you'll find in the largest numbers and the one most used buyers should target. Two motors, roughly 330 miles of EPA range on 2170-cell cars, and a history that stretches across all four years of this generation.

Fremont-built Long Range AWD cars use Panasonic 2170 (NMC) cells and are the benchmark: 327-330 miles of range, 10-80% charging in roughly 27-30 minutes at a Supercharger. These are the cars to target.

Texas-built Long Range AWD cars from 2022 onward may use Tesla's 4680 cells in a structural battery pack. The 4680 variant has real-world problems. In testing, the 4680 Model Y charges from 10-80% in more than 40 minutes, compared to 27-30 minutes for the 2170 version. Heat builds up inside the pack and causes charging power to drop sharply above 35% state of charge. Some owners also report faster-than-expected battery degradation. If you are buying a 2022 or 2023 Long Range AWD, confirm the battery type before buying. The 11th character of the VIN indicates factory: "F" for Fremont, "A" for Austin. Austin-built cars are more likely to have 4680 cells.
