Full disclosure: we make CarScout, which is on this list. AutoTempest is free, it searches a long list of partner sites, and it sends daily email alerts. You probably don't need to replace it. You may want to add to it, and this page is about what to add.
The bottom line
Keep AutoTempest and add a free Autotrader alert, because AutoTempest says it isn't affiliated with Autotrader. Add CarGurus for deal ratings. Pay for Visor Plus if you need factory-option filters, or CarScout if you want exclusion filters and VIN tracking in one daily email.

Why people look past AutoTempest
There are three common reasons, and only one of them is about AutoTempest itself.
- Alert coverage. AutoTempest's legal page separates partner listings, which it shows, from links to other sites. It says it isn't affiliated with craigslist or AutoTrader. If a site only appears as a link, don't count on its cars showing up in your AutoTempest email.
- Price judgment. AutoTempest offers price trends and listing price history. CarGurus and iSeeCars add per-listing deal labels.
- Filter control. Some buyers want to exclude things, or filter on factory options.
1. Autotrader
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Alerts on a site AutoTempest only links to | Free | Email or text, daily or weekly |
AutoTempest says it isn't affiliated with AutoTrader, so a direct Autotrader alert is the reliable way to cover that site. You can choose email or text, daily or weekly. Autotrader lists dealers and private sellers and shows Kelley Blue Book Price Advisor on dealer listings.
Where it falls short: it only watches Autotrader.
2. CarGurus
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Deal ratings and app alerts | Free | Saved-search alerts; app advertises real-time price alerts |
AutoTempest gives comparison links to CarGurus rather than showing its listings directly, so a direct CarGurus alert covers that inventory. You also get deal ratings, from Great to Overpriced, based on its Instant Market Value, and app alerts it describes as real-time.
Where it falls short: it only watches CarGurus.
3. Visor
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Option-level filters and listing history | Free search; Plus $5/week, $15/month, $60/year, or $250 lifetime | Saved-search alerts for new listings |
Visor is for buyers who care about installed options and pricing history. Plus filters on options, features, and MSRP, shows installed options on listings, and includes sold listings.
Where it falls short: the features most people switch for are paid.
4. CarScout (ours)
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusions and VIN tracking in one daily email | $5/week, $15/month, $99/year; 3 scouts included | One digest email a day |
CarScout checks MarketCheck's dealer listings for your spec about every 24 hours and sends one digest of new matches and price drops. Price, mileage, and year ranges work as limits. Colors, transmission, drivetrain, body style, fuel type, and keywords can each include or exclude. So "any color but silver, no automatic" works. VIN scouts follow a single car or a wildcard pattern.
Where it falls short: it's paid, dealer-only, web-only, and covers fewer kinds of sellers than AutoTempest. Like AutoTempest, it sends a daily email.
5. iSeeCars
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Free price analysis per listing | Free; paid VIN report tiers | Email for new listings and price drops |
iSeeCars lists 59 filters, calculates market values, and flags underpriced and overpriced listings with Below Market and Above Market labels. Use it to sanity-check a price on a car you found through AutoTempest.
Where it falls short: another site and another alert to manage.
6. Cars.com
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Price-drop notifications on saved cars | Free | Price-drop notifications on favorite cars |
AutoTempest already shows Cars.com listings. Going direct adds Cars.com's Great Deal, Good Deal, and Fair Price labels and price-drop notifications on favorite cars.
Where it falls short: little that AutoTempest doesn't already show you.
What each costs over a 3-month search

| Autotrader | $0 | $0 |
| CarGurus | $0 | $0 |
| iSeeCars | $0 (reports extra) | $0 |

| CarScout | $45 monthly | $99 annual |
When AutoTempest is enough
If your car is common, you don't mind private sellers or auctions, and its daily email isn't overflowing, keep AutoTempest and stop there. It's free and broad. Most of this list is for edge cases.
How we checked
We read each provider's pricing, help, legal, and app store pages, and quoted what each says about itself. Most pages were checked on October 2, 2026; Autotrader's help page was checked on September 18, 2026. We didn't measure alert timing or rank on reviews. Where a provider doesn't state a fact, we say so.
How to switch, or add
- Keep your AutoTempest alert running.
- Copy the same search into Autotrader and turn on email or text alerts.
- Optional: save the search in CarGurus to see deal ratings on new matches.
- If you need exclusions or VIN tracking, set the spec up as a CarScout scout.
- After two weeks, turn off whichever alert sends nothing new.
