Full disclosure: we make CarScout, which is on this list. Autotrader's free alerts come by email or text, daily or weekly, and it lists dealers and private sellers. That's a good free setup. Here's what to use next to it, or instead of it, depending on what you're missing.

What Autotrader already does well

Before switching, know what you'd give up. Autotrader's help describes email and text alerts on saved searches, daily or weekly. Its app adds price-drop alerts and new-listing notifications, and every Autotrader dealer listing shows Kelley Blue Book Price Advisor. It lists dealers and private sellers. If you leave, the text alerts are the hardest thing to replace. We didn't find text alerts documented on the other tools' pages we checked, and CarScout sends email only.

1. CarGurus

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Deal ratings and app alerts Free Saved-search alerts; app advertises real-time price alerts

CarGurus rates listings against its Instant Market Value, from Great to Overpriced, where a rating is available, and updates that value daily. Saved searches alert you to new listings and price drops. It lists private sellers too.

Where it falls short: it watches only CarGurus.

2. AutoTempest

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Many sites in one search Free Daily email

AutoTempest shows listings from Cars.com, TrueCar, eBay Motors, Carvana, Hemmings, Cars & Bids, and CarSoup. It gives comparison links to Autotrader and CarGurus rather than including their listings, so keep a direct Autotrader alert if that site matters.

Where it falls short: alerts are daily email, and it offers price trends and price history rather than per-listing deal ratings.

3. iSeeCars

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Free price analysis per listing Free; paid VIN report tiers Email for new listings and price drops

iSeeCars lists 59 filters, includes for-sale-by-owner listings, and flags underpriced and overpriced cars with Below Market and Above Market labels. It's a good substitute for Autotrader's KBB guidance.

Where it falls short: one more alert inbox to manage.

4. CarScout (ours)

Best for Price How alerts arrive
One daily email across dealer listings $5/week, $15/month, $99/year; 3 scouts included One digest email a day

CarScout checks MarketCheck's dealer listings for your spec about every 24 hours and sends one email with new matches and price drops. Price, mileage, and year ranges work as limits. Colors, transmission, drivetrain, body style, fuel type, and keywords can each include or exclude. VIN scouts follow a single car or a wildcard pattern.

Where it falls short: email only, no texts, no weekly option, no private sellers, and no app. Autotrader's free alerts do several things CarScout doesn't.

5. Visor

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Option-level filters and listing history Free search; Plus $5/week, $15/month, $60/year, or $250 lifetime Saved-search alerts for new listings

Visor shows the full listing history and every price change. Plus filters on options, features, and MSRP and shows sold listings. For a car with specific factory options, it's the best research tool here.

Where it falls short: the best features are paid.

6. Cars.com

Best for Price How alerts arrive
Another large marketplace Free Price-drop notifications on favorite cars

Cars.com shows Great Deal, Good Deal, and Fair Price labels. You can save cars and searches, and turn on price-drop notifications for favorite cars. It's the closest like-for-like swap for Autotrader.

Where it falls short: it's another single marketplace.

What each costs over a 3-month search

Tool 3 months 1 year
Autotrader $0 $0
CarGurus $0 $0
AutoTempest $0 $0
iSeeCars $0 (reports extra) $0
Cars.com $0 $0
Visor Plus $45 monthly $60 annual
CarScout $45 monthly $99 annual

When Autotrader is enough

If you like text alerts, you're open to private sellers, and your car shows up on Autotrader often, stay. Add CarGurus for free deal ratings and you've got a strong setup at no cost.

How we checked

We read each provider's own pricing, help, legal, and app store pages, mostly on October 2, 2026. Autotrader's help page was checked on September 18, 2026. We quoted what each provider says and didn't test alert timing.

How to switch, or add

  1. Keep your Autotrader saved search and its text alerts.
  2. Add the same search in CarGurus for deal ratings.
  3. Optional: run it in AutoTempest for partner sites in one email.
  4. If you want one email for dealer listings across sites, with exclusions, set it up as a CarScout scout.
  5. After two weeks, drop whichever alert never sends anything new.
