Full disclosure: we make CarScout, one of the tools here. Trucks are where search filters break down fastest: cab style, bed length, drivetrain, engine, trim, and towing equipment all multiply. Most truck shoppers aren't short of listings. They're short of listings that match.
The bottom line
For a used truck with a specific cab, bed, drivetrain, and trim, CarScout is our pick for the filterable part: trim, drivetrain, years, mileage, and color in one daily email of dealer trucks. Cab and bed need seller confirmation. If a factory package decides it, Visor Plus filters on options. Free picks: AutoTempest for breadth and Autotrader for text alerts and private sellers.

Why truck searches are hard
A half-ton pickup can come in several cab styles, two or three bed lengths, two drivetrains, multiple engines, and a long list of trims and packages. That's dozens of combinations for one model and year, and you probably want exactly one.
Some of those fields filter well everywhere: drivetrain, trim, year, mileage. Others, such as cab, bed length, and tow package, often sit only in the trim name or the listing text. That's why an alert built only on structured filters can send trucks that are close but wrong.
The fix is the same in any tool: filter on what's structured, exclude what you know you don't want, and confirm the rest with the seller before you travel.
1. CarScout (ours)
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| A strict truck spec with exclusions | $5/week, $15/month, $99/year; 3 scouts included | One daily digest email |
This is ours. A spec scout takes make, model, trim, years, price, mileage, drivetrain, transmission, fuel, colors, and heading keywords. Ranges set the limits, and drivetrain, transmission, fuel, body, colors, and keywords can each include or exclude. "4WD only, Lariat or King Ranch trim, no silver, under 80,000 miles" is one scout. We check dealer listings through MarketCheck about every 24 hours and send one email with new matches and price drops.
Three scouts per plan lets you watch, say, the same truck from two brands plus one exact VIN.
Where it falls short: dealer listings only, no private sellers, no texts, no app, no option decoding. Keywords match the listing heading only, so cab and bed details often need a call to the seller.
2. Visor
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Factory packages and options | Free search; Plus $5/week, $15/month, $60/year, or $250 lifetime | Saved-search alerts for new listings |
If the truck must have a specific factory package, Visor Plus is the better tool. It filters on options, features, and MSRP and shows installed options on listings, so you don't rely on the dealer's description.
Where it falls short: the option features are paid.
3. AutoTempest
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Free breadth across sites | Free | Daily email |
AutoTempest shows listings from Cars.com, TrueCar, eBay Motors, Carvana, Hemmings, Cars & Bids, and CarSoup in one search, links to Autotrader and Facebook Marketplace, and sends a daily email. It's the free way to see how many of your configuration exist.
Where it falls short: Autotrader and CarGurus are comparison links, so their trucks need their own alerts.
4. Autotrader
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Text alerts and private sellers | Free | Email or text, daily or weekly |
Plenty of trucks sell privately. Autotrader lists dealers and private sellers and can text you about new matches.
Where it falls short: it watches Autotrader only.
5. CarGurus
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Price checks on common trucks | Free | Saved-search alerts; app advertises real-time price alerts |
For high-volume trucks, CarGurus deal ratings have lots of comparable listings to work from, which makes them a useful price check.
Where it falls short: it watches CarGurus only.
Our pick
Use CarScout for trim, drivetrain, years, mileage, and color filters in one daily digest. Cab and bed details need seller confirmation; keywords help only when they appear in the listing heading. Use Visor Plus if a factory package is the deal-breaker. Keep a free Autotrader alert running for private sellers either way.
What we'd do today
- Write the spec as cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, trim, and years. Add your deal-breakers.
- Run it in AutoTempest to see how many exist nationally.
- Set up a free Autotrader alert for private sellers.
- Turn the spec into one CarScout scout with exclusions, or use Visor Plus if a package decides it.
- Before you buy, decode the VIN with our free VIN decoder and check recalls.
FAQ
What's the best app to find a specific used truck configuration?
CarScout for a strict spec with exclusions, delivered once a day. Visor Plus if the configuration depends on factory options.
Can I filter by bed length or cab style?
It depends on how the listing describes the truck. CarScout keywords match the listing heading only. If the heading names the cab, a keyword can catch it; bed length rarely appears there. Confirm with the seller.
Does CarScout include private-party trucks?
No. CarScout watches dealer listings. Use Autotrader or AutoTempest for private sellers.
Can CarScout text me when a truck is listed?
No. CarScout sends one daily digest email. Autotrader offers text alerts.
How much does CarScout cost for a truck search?
$5 a week, $15 a month, or $99 a year, with 3 scouts included. There's no free trial.
Try CarScout
If your truck spec keeps returning near-misses, set up a scout with exclusions. It's $5 a week and checks dealer listings daily.
