Full disclosure: we make CarScout, and it isn't the right tool for classic cars. CarScout watches dealer listings, and many collector cars change hands at auction or between enthusiasts. We'd rather send you to the right places than sell you a subscription that won't see most of the market.
The bottom line
For classic and collector cars, use the specialist marketplaces: Hemmings for classifieds and auctions, Bring a Trailer for curated online auctions, and Cars & Bids for modern enthusiast cars. AutoTempest is a free way to search Hemmings, Cars & Bids, and eBay Motors at once. CarScout watches dealer listings, so it isn't our pick here.

Why classic car search is different
Where the cars are. Collector cars often sell through auctions and enthusiast classifieds, not regular dealer inventory feeds. A tool built on dealer listings sees only part of that market.
Price discovery. Condition, originality, and documentation drive value more than mileage or trim. Sold results from auctions are the most useful price reference.
Specs aren't standardized. Restomods, engine swaps, and color changes make structured filters less useful. You read listings rather than filter them.
1. Hemmings
| Best for | Price to use | How you hear about new cars |
|---|---|---|
| Classic classifieds and auctions | Free app | Saved searches and favorites in its app |
Hemmings has served the collector car community for decades, with classifieds and Hemmings Auctions. Its app description says you can save listings and searches, contact sellers through the app, and bid on Hemmings Auctions.
Where it falls short: check how and how often saved-search notifications arrive in the current app before you rely on them.
2. Bring a Trailer
| Best for | Price to use | How you hear about new cars |
|---|---|---|
| Curated online auctions | Buyer's fee when you win | Check the site and its current notification options |
Bring a Trailer runs curated online auctions for enthusiast and collector cars. Winning bidders pay a buyer's fee on top of the bid. Check the current amount on BaT before you bid, and include it in your budget.
Where it falls short: it's an auction, so timing and bidding discipline matter.
3. Cars & Bids
| Best for | Price to use | How you hear about new cars |
|---|---|---|
| Modern enthusiast car auctions | Buyer's fee when you win | Daily email; watch list |
Cars & Bids describes itself as an auction site for modern enthusiast cars, from the 1980s on. Sign up for its daily email, add cars to your watch list, and use its past results to calibrate prices.
Where it falls short: check whether its inventory includes the years you want. Check the current buyer fee before you bid.
4. AutoTempest
| Best for | Price to use | How you hear about new cars |
|---|---|---|
| Searching several of these at once | Free | Daily email |
AutoTempest shows listings from Hemmings, Cars & Bids, and eBay Motors alongside dealer sites, with daily email alerts. Check craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Bring a Trailer separately.
Where it falls short: not every specialist site is a partner. Keep checking your favorites directly.
5. CarScout (ours)
| Best for | Price | How alerts arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Not recommended for classics | $5/week, $15/month, $99/year | One daily digest email |
CarScout watches dealer listings through MarketCheck and filters on structured fields. That works for modern used cars. It doesn't cover auctions or private sellers, where much of the classic market trades. We don't recommend it for this search.
Our pick
Hemmings and Bring a Trailer for classics, and Cars & Bids for modern enthusiast cars. Add a free AutoTempest alert for the sites it includes, and check Bring a Trailer directly. If you're also shopping for a modern daily driver, that's where CarScout fits.
What we'd do today
- Read 20 to 30 past results for your car on Cars & Bids or other auction sites to learn real prices.
- Save searches on Hemmings and check its notification settings.
- Set up a free AutoTempest alert for the make and model.
- Join an owners' forum or club. Many good cars sell by word of mouth.
- Budget for an independent inspection by a specialist in that make before you bid or buy.
FAQ
What's the best website for classic cars?
Hemmings for classifieds and auctions, and Bring a Trailer for curated online auctions. Many buyers use both.
Does CarScout find classic cars?
Rarely, and we don't recommend it for them. CarScout watches dealer listings only, and many collector cars sell at auction or privately.
Do auction sites charge buyers a fee?
Yes. Bring a Trailer and Cars & Bids both charge the winning bidder a fee on top of the bid. Check each site's current fee before you bid.
Is there one app that searches all classic car sites?
AutoTempest comes closest for free. It shows Hemmings, Cars & Bids, and eBay Motors listings, but not every specialist site.
How do I judge a classic car's price?
Use sold prices, not asking prices. Past results on Cars & Bids show what cars sold for at auction there.
If you're also buying a modern car
CarScout is built for modern used cars from dealers. If that's part of your search, set up a scout. For the classic, use the specialists.
