Used Tesla Model 3 and Model Y: Which Year to Buy

218,868 Teslas got recalled in April 2026 for a rearview camera delay. Tesla pushed the OTA fix within 25 days, and by the time NHTSA published the formal notice, 99.92% of affected vehicles were already updated. That's the OTA system doing what it's supposed to do. It also illustrates why buying a used Tesla works differently from every other used car purchase: the software changes after you buy it. The hardware doesn't.

The hardware version your Model 3 or Model Y is running determines more about its long-term value than the trim, color, or how many previous owners it had. It's also the one detail most sellers don't lead with.

The Three Hardware Generations

Tesla has shipped three Autopilot hardware generations across the Model 3 and Model Y era.

Hardware 2 (HW2/HW2.5) was fitted in Model 3s built from 2017 through late 2018. Eight cameras, radar, 12 ultrasonic sensors. The processor can't run the Full Self-Driving stack at any capability level. Tesla ended FSD support for HW2 vehicles in 2022. If you're looking at a 2017 or 2018 Model 3, Autopilot is a ceiling, not a feature.

Hardware 3 (HW3) was Tesla's standard computer from late 2019 through approximately mid-2023. 144 TOPS of processing power. It runs the current FSD stack, receives software updates, and has a clear support runway. The vast majority of used Model 3 and Model Y inventory on the market right now runs HW3.

Hardware 4 (AI4/HW4) is standard on Model 3 Highland (2024 and up) and Model Y units built after roughly May 2023 in the US. Camera resolution jumped from 1280x960 to 2896x1876. Processing speed is 3 to 5 times faster than HW3, per Tesla's own figures. The easiest external tell: red-tinted front camera lenses. Tesla has confirmed no retrofit path from HW3 to HW4 exists.

If HW4 is a priority, the cheapest used entry point for a Model Y is roughly $22,000 to $25,000 for a late-2023 build. For the Model 3 Highland, you're looking at 2024 and up, starting around $26,000.

Used Market by Year

Per CarScout listing data from May 2026:

Year Model Listings Starting Price Median Mileage Hardware
2024 Model 3 343 $25,995 ~26,000 mi HW4
2023 Model 3 1,284 $11,700* ~32,000 mi HW3 (most)
2022 Model 3 614 $8,800* ~60,000 mi HW3
2021 Model 3 562 $13,499 ~58,000 mi HW3
2024 Model Y 678 $22,990 ~26,000 mi HW4
2023 Model Y 1,079 $21,888 ~32,000 mi HW3 or HW4
2022 Model Y 741 $15,962 ~60,000 mi HW3
2021 Model Y 854 $1,000* ~74,000 mi HW3

*Floor prices reflect salvage and auction units. Clean-title street-ready Model 3s start around $16,000 for 2021-2022 builds; Model Ys around $18,000.

The 2023 inventory split is the awkward one. Model Y units from early 2023 have HW3. Units from late May 2023 onward (US market) have HW4. You can't tell from the listing year alone. You have to check the car in person.

Battery Degradation

Real-world fleet data tracked by Recurrent shows Model 3 and Model Y Long Range packs lose roughly 5 to 8% of capacity by 60,000 to 80,000 miles, then the degradation curve flattens significantly. At 100,000 miles, most packs hold 88 to 92% of original capacity. At 200,000 miles, average degradation sits around 15%, according to Tesla's own 2022 Impact Report data.

Tesla warrants Model 3 and Model Y batteries to retain at least 70% capacity over 8 years or between 100,000 and 120,000 miles depending on trim. Standard Range covers 100k. Long Range covers 120k. If you're buying outside that window, you're unprotected.

For any vehicle over 100,000 miles, request a battery health report from a Tesla service center before purchase. Takes about 20 minutes. No charge. You'll see the pack's rated range and a breakdown of current health versus original.

How FSD Works on a Resale

Tesla's FSD Transfer Program, which let original buyers carry a purchased FSD license to a new Tesla, ended March 31, 2026.

FSD purchased as a software package is tied to a Tesla account, not a VIN. When a used Tesla changes hands, FSD does not automatically move to the new owner. The seller's account retains the license unless Tesla's ownership transfer process explicitly reassigns it to the vehicle's new account.

Before paying any premium for FSD on a used Tesla, confirm the capability shows up in the Autopilot settings under your account after transfer. Check the VIN at tesla.com. Seller claims don't count.

The FSD subscription is available on any HW3 or HW4 vehicle at $99/month regardless of ownership history. For most used buyers, skipping an FSD premium entirely and subscribing later is the cleaner path.

What to Verify Before You Buy

Hardware version: Go to Settings > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. "Autopilot computer" will read "Full Self-Driving Computer" for HW3 and "AI4" for HW4. Don't rely on the listing year for this.

Recall status: The May 2026 rearview camera recall (NHTSA 26V283) covers certain 2017 and 2021-2023 Model 3s and 2020-2023 Model Ys running software version 2026.8.6. Any vehicle on version 2026.8.6.1 or later is remediated. Check the software version in the car's Software menu before handoff.

Charging history: Frequent DC fast charging at high state of charge accelerates battery degradation. Look at the stated max range at full charge and compare it to the EPA rating for that trim. Anything below 85% of original rated range on a sub-100,000 mile vehicle is worth asking about.

Glass roof condition: The Model Y panoramic glass roof has generated a notable volume of NHTSA complaints for spontaneous cracking, concentrated on 2020 to 2022 builds. Inspect the corners and edges before purchase. A surface crack that looks cosmetic can grow.

Is a used Model 3 with HW3 worth buying in 2026? Yes, with the right price. HW3 vehicles receive the same software updates for Navigate on Autopilot, lane change, and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control. The FSD subscription stack runs on HW3. Where HW4 pulls ahead is camera resolution and headroom for future autonomy improvements. If you're not paying for FSD, the HW3 vs. HW4 gap is smaller in practice than it sounds in spec sheets.

Which year Model Y offers the best value? 2022 and early 2023 Model Y Long Range units land between roughly $24,000 and $32,000 with 30,000 to 60,000 miles, have the most listing volume for negotiating room, and run HW3 with a long support runway. 2021 and earlier units carry higher mileage and slower depreciation, which works for buyers focused on total cost of ownership over technology headroom.

How do I know if a 2023 Model Y has HW3 or HW4? Check the Autopilot computer entry in Settings > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. Physically, HW4 vehicles have two red-tinted and one black (non-functional) front camera lens. HW3 vehicles have three lenses with no color differentiation. The listing year tells you nothing reliable about this; production shifted mid-year.
